In the last forty seven years, I have represented good people who were under the influence of alcohol or drugs (legal and illegal) who have killed or seriously injured others while driving. And, it is not uncommon for innocent people to be killed or seriously injured by reckless drivers (usually speeding) who are not “under the influence”.
Aside from the devastating effect on so many lives, the potential punishment in our criminal justice system is severe. It is not uncommon in cases of vehicular homicide or vehicular manslaughter to see sentences of twelve or more years, even when the driver had no prior criminal history.
So, drive carefully. Do not text while driving, and do not drive if you are under the influence of any substance that impairs your ability to drive safely.
And, the obvious: avoid road rage!
If you have too much to drink, or if you are “high”, call someone to get you. Call Uber or Lyft or a taxi. It’s certainly not worth it to risk your future by driving recklessly or while impaired!
