What is the difference between a felony, a misdemeanor, and a violation?

Video Transcription

People are often confused, they don’t know the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony. The definition is all you need to know. If it’s punishable by a year or less it’s a misdemeanor, that’s it. If it’s punishable by over a year, in custody as a potential sentence, it’s a felony. That’s true whether it’s state court or federal court anywhere in the United States.
