The Most Common Holiday Crimes in Florida

While the holidays are the merriest and most joyful time of the year, the season is also known for a significant spike in criminal activity. While some crimes are caused by a lapse in judgment or a simple mistake, others are meticulously planned and executed.

Here is a list of the most common crimes during the holidays:

  • DUI – As we mentioned in an earlier blog titled “DUI & The Holidays,” alcohol consumption is often a part of holiday celebrations, which is why DUI arrests and drunk driving accidents increase during the cold winter months. The police will do their best to keep the roads safe and arrest drunk drivers by increasing the number of police officers and DUI checkpoints. Check out the previous blog post to learn about several ways to avoid getting a holiday DUI.
  • Sex crimes – Alcohol consumption during holiday parties and other festive gatherings can also lead to rape and sexual assault. Women who consume a significant amount of alcohol are typically at risk of becoming a sex crime victim. To avoid being accused of sexual misconduct at a holiday party, limit the amount of alcohol you consume and keep your comments and hands to yourself.
  • Domestic violence – Since you are constantly around family members during the holidays compared to any other time of year, the stress of the season and unresolved issues with loved ones can lead to domestic violence incidents. Law enforcement officials respond to more domestic violence calls during this time of year. If you anticipate tensions will run high, work with a professional to resolve the problem.
  • Theft crimes – Shoplifting is the most common theft crime during the holidays since malls and stores throughout Florida and the rest of the country are overcrowded and chaotic, causing shoplifters to take advantage of distracted and overworked retail employees and security staff. Although many people now do their holiday shopping online, thefts from porch pirates have become a common problem in recent years. Lastly, since homes are left unattended for long periods of time due to holiday vacations and travel, burglaries often occur. However, theft crimes are typically thwarted by cameras and other security systems, which provide the police with evidence to identify the criminal and press charges. If you’re thinking about saving money during the holidays by stealing, know that you are most likely being watched.
