DUI & The Holidays

The holidays consist of festive gatherings with loved ones, special events with employers and coworkers, and being merry and joyful throughout the season. However, alcohol is often a part of holiday festivities, which is why there is a significant increase in DUI arrests and drunk driving accidents starting from Thanksgiving Eve (Black Wednesday) until New Year’s Day.

The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) states that 40 percent of traffic accident fatalities during Christmas and New Year’s Day involve intoxicated motorists. That is why police departments throughout Florida and other states will increase the number of law enforcement officials patrolling the streets and DUI checkpoints to arrest suspected drunk drivers.

In order to avoid spending your holiday season behind bars, the following are several ways to not drink and drive:

  • Avoid drinking – You are not in danger of getting a DUI when you remain sober. Furthermore, you can be a designated driver for one or more individuals who need a safe ride home.
  • Find a designated driver – If you choose to have a few drinks at an event, ask a trustworthy friend to be your designated driver.
  • Get a ride from Uber or Lyft – If you can’t find a designated driver—or if he/she succumbed to peer pressure—you can always rely on requesting a ride home using a ridesharing app. Remember, surge pricing may apply during drinking holidays such as New Year’s Day.
  • Sleepover – If the event is far away from your home, either book a hotel or motel room, or ask a friend who lives close by if you can spend the night after the event is over to avoid having to travel all the way back to your place.
  • Be the host – To avoid leaving your home, you can throw the party at your place. Make sure there is plenty of room for your guests to sleep over or make driving arrangements prior to the party to get your guests home safe.
