Crackdown on Alleged Medicare Fraud: Dozens of Arrests

In Miami, Medicare fraud is Florida's most lucrative crime. One of the most common forms of Medicare fraud is when pharmacists pay senior citizens kickbacks (i.e. bribes) in exchange for billing Medicare in their name for medication they don’t need. The Statewide Prosecutor’s Office, Miami-Dade police, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services are now working together in an attempt to arrest key players in South Florida Pharmacies and take the cases to federal court.

On Tuesday, law enforcement arrested dozens of people associated with Tata Pharmacy Discount, Lozano Health Care, Wynwood Family Pharmacy, and Santander Pharmacy. Among the arrests were pharmacists, administrators, and “professional beneficiaries,” the patients who allegedly accepted the kickbacks in exchange for participating in the scam. Police selected suspects based on information from cooperators who secretly wore wires.

According to police, at least 30 of these people will be charged with racketeering, organized scheme to defraud, and money laundering. The arrest warrant says the federal government paid Tata Pharmacy over $5 million for thousands of claims, covering medications that were neither needed nor dispensed to the patients. The warrant also claims the pharmacies impersonated doctors and nurse practitioners in order to “prescribe” the medications.
