New Florida Laws in Effect on January 1, 2020

January 1, 2020 marks the beginning of a new year and a new decade. However, it’s also bringing several new laws in Florida.

The following are some laws that will be in effect at the start of the New Year:

  • Texting and driving – As of January 1, 2020, state law enforcement agencies and highway patrol troopers will start issuing tickets to drivers who are caught texting while driving. While this new law went into effect back in July, Florida motorists were given a grace period until December 31, which meant police officers could only pull over drivers and give them a written or verbal warning. A first offense will result in a $30 fine (not including court costs) and a second offense within five years carries a $60 fine (not including court fees) and three points on a driver’s record.
  • Legal age to smoke increased to 21 years old – Individuals who are under 21 years of age are no longer allowed to legally purchase and use tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes and vaping products.
  • A 10-cent increase of state’s minimum wage – Florida’s minimum age will slightly increase from $8.46 to $8.56 per hour. Employees who receive tips are also subject to a minor increase from $5.44 to $5.54 an hour (not including tips). By September 30, 2021, the state’s minimum wage will increase to $10 an hour.
  • Electronic notarization – In 2020, Florida residents can have their documents electronically notarized. The signer and witnesses can appear before a registered online notary public either by electronic means or in person.
  • Electronic prescriptions – Health care providers can electronically send prescriptions to pharmacies to better track such medications.
