If the IRS agent show up at your door, it’s very likely that you are the target of an IRS investigation which has enormous consequences for you. It’s a federal crime which can result in significant prison time and in often circumstances significant restitution back to the government which means that if there is an investigation and they discover that you haven’t paid your taxes over a period of years at some point that money has to be paid back to them. If the IRS agent show up at your door, you should contact us immediately. Be polite and be courteous to them but don’t answer any questions regarding any tax refund that you have not filed or any information that they might ask you of. It is not in your best interest at all to answer these questions because what can often happen is you are providing them the evidence that they need to prosecute in a federal case.

In other circumstances, they might be showing up because they believe that you are a witness to some sort of an IRS investigation. Even in those circumstances you’d still need to contact an experienced criminal defense attorney that you can be assured that you don’t then become the target of their investigation.
