How do I know if my criminal defense lawyer is a trial lawyer?
Most lawyers never go into court. When you are charged with a crime you need a criminal defense lawyer, ideally board-certified, who’s been in court for years and years and years, a lawyer who is known and respected by the prosecutors, a lawyer who is known and respected by the judge, a lawyer who handles trials, a lawyer who handles pleas, a lawyer who excels at all phases of the criminal practice.
Ask your lawyer, ask your lawyer if he or she is board-certified. Ask your lawyer how many years he or she has been practicing. Ask your lawyer how many cases he or she has handled, how many districts, how many states your lawyer has practiced in, how many appeals your lawyer has handled.
All of these go into the mix, but the most important thing is that you be comfortable with your criminal defense lawyer, because we have the responsibility for your freedom, for your future, and we take that very, very seriously, and so should you.
